My ethernet cable won't get me an IP address...

Here's a weird situation. I have a retractable ethernet cable from Targus
that I've been using for a couple months now. As of today, I can't get an
IP address using that cable. Other cables work fine.

I plug it into the ethernet port and all of the lights are on. XP says I'm
connected. But for some reason the damn thing won't get an IP address. I
tried switching cables (connecting to the same port) and voila, I can get
an IP.

I ran Etherpeek and it doesn't show any acknowledgement at all from teh
DNS server.

So could the cable somehow be preventing me from getting an IP address?

Do you get link lights at BOTH ends? Ethernet uses separate transmit and
receive conductor pairs. If the receive pair is good but the transmit
pair is bad you'll get a link light at that end, but won't be able to
actually communicate.

Ethernet cables are fragile, retractable ones especially, chuck it and
buy another.

First Law of Telcom: it's always the cables.

Better yet, get rid of the Beamer and buy a real car... *everything*
will be much better ;-)
