Discussion:
Where are they now?

After many, many years of being away from Primenet, I suddenly had an
urge to see if any of those old posts still existed. I couldn't find
them, but I did find a few old Primenet names here in A.P.R. James,
Billy, Hosun and Blair are all names I recognize from the old days.

So, if it's not too presumptuous to ask, what's everyone up to? Does
Billy still run an ISP out of his living room? Is Mix Magazine still
breathing down his neck? Is James still working? Or has his
skepticism gotten the better of him? :)

And what about the others? Are you in contact with any of the old
Primenet Usenet'ers?

I'm still out here. Still always tweaking my shell environment...on
Panix now. :-)

I work at Caesars Tahoe in the IT department. Been there for almost 6
years...lots of changes and stress over the past few years and more to
come, I am sure, as our parent company was bought out by Harrah's.

I don't speak with any former P'Neters but I have had a few exchanges
with Billy and Hosun over the years.

Still here. Still consulting. Still rolling past this
group looking for anything worth talking about and not
finding much of it.

Not working for Intel anymore, but then, that was 5 years ago. :-)
Definitely don't have the same e-mail address.

I used to live in the SF Bay area, moved down to Southern California to do
an MBA, and am moving back up shortly. Been spending my time doing job
searching and playing City of Heroes, not necessarily in that order.

Unfortunately I haven't had the time to post my 10000 rquests for help
per day, which is why the group has dwindled. (This is my belief
based on scientific evidence). Rest assured that I will prove to be very
needy shortly.

During my time here I ran into Billy a lot. He's just as nice and
interesting as ever.

One of these days we should do a FroGloFest again. Although we should
try to pick a city that's not from hell.

I've missed at least one FroGloFest in the last year or two, but I only
know of one for certain that I've missed. I might have slipped through
the screening process and not been invited to one since then.

I definitely haven't been to one in Mesa or Chandler. The last one I went
to was at the Chinese place in Phoenix.

BTW: I've gotten married and had a kid since I last attended a
FroGloFest.

Maybe. We've certainly raised our standards. It's getting harder and
harder to get an invite to a FroGloFest nowadays.

We even have a secret handshake now.

Claim Jumper. Baseline Road, just a mile-and-a-half
or so east of Fry's Electronics (i.e about 2/4 mile east of I-10),
on the north side of the road. It's on the south-east periphery
of Arizona Mills. And there is a Kripsy-Kreme store about
a half-mile north of it.

What's good in Tempe?
Depends what you're looking for. In downtown Tempe, there's Gordon
Biersch, which isn't huge, and not equipped for large, roundtable
gatherings, but the food and beer are excellent. There's also Monti's La
Casa Vieja, which is a steakhouse of variable reputation (it used to be
cheap-but-pretty-good, although lately, it's varied between cheap-but-not-
as-good-as-it-used-to-be and back-to-pretty-good-but-more-expensive-
than-it-used-to-be). Depending on the time of year (and time of day and
day of week), Macayo's Depot Cantina is also a good place. Their food is
good and their beer is cold. It's near ASU, so it's packed on Friday and
Saturday night, and during football season, it's packed on Saturday and
Sunday afternoons, but if you picked a weekend after football season while
the students were on winter break, you'd likely have the run of the place.

Claim Jumper (as suggested in another post) is a place that's known for
its oversized portions. I believe I heard that a past FroGloFest was held
at a Bucca Di Beppo, which is also known for oversized portions, but
unlike Bucca Di Beppo, Claim Jumper doesn't assume family-style eating
arrangements, so every enormous dish is a complete meal. An order of
"appetizers" could easily feed two people completely. Some friends and I
once made the mistake of ordering zucchini and deep-fried mushrooms before
ordering our meals. The zooks were 10" long, 1" diameter spears that came
out on a platter. There must have been two dozen large mushrooms on the
mushroom plate. Needless to say, we couldn't finish the appetizers, and
we barely touched our meals.

There are also all manner of other chain places, such as Outback, Macaroni
Grill, Sweet Tomatoes, etc.

BTW: In Chandler, at the mall (and nearby), there must be a dozen
restaurants: Garduno's, Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen,
Kona Grill, Rockfish, The Elephant Bar, PF Chang's, Abuelo's, etc.

:-) Wimp. True, though, only real men can eat a Claim Jumper
meal and an appetizer, and still have room for desert. Real FAT mem.
It's the best palce I can think of to take a sumo wrestler. :-)

The Spinach and Artichoke dip at CJ is the best I've had, BTW.

Outback seems to have changed some, it's not as good
as it used to be IMHO.

I thought the Cheesecake Factory cheesecake was dry and tasteless.
My wife makes way better cheesecake.

California Pizza Kitchen,
Okay pizza.
Post by Paul Wylie
Kona Grill, Rockfish
Rockfish is IMHO overpriced and underspiced.

In about 4-5 months I believe. Just in time

Other than that, I've been thinking about going

renew your New York one on-line (pretty cool..) so
that's probably what I'm going to do.

Actually, AZ DL's are good until age 60, then you gotta renew. You can get
a duplicate online if they have a digital picture on file. If no digital
pic, you gotta go in person. I think you also have to show up to renew so
they can give you a vision test. After age 60 they're only good for a few
(four?) years. At a certain age (72?) you gotta renew every year. At least,
IIRC...
