Shampoo dispenser was hung on shower wall with silicone rubber.

Shower wall material is Corian.

Any cute tricks to remove the silicone rubber without scratching the
Corian?

Thanks!

I don't know much about Corian but silicone is one of the toughest
caulks to get off. The only trick I know is the razor blade thing.
Sometimes I use a piece of Perspex where I sharpened one edge but that
might also scratch. Most likely it isn't just silicone but some kind of
adhesive added in.

Anyway, as far as I know Corian can be buffed.

Surfing, I found a silicone caulk remover at Ace Hardware. I'll run
over to the corner and see what it claims on the packaging.

Maybe look for the 1-800 number of the mfg on the web and call their
support. Just to make sure that this stuff won't leach into the Corian.
I remember someone who tried to remove a spot from an engineered-stone
table and they ended up with a more diffused but now permanent stain.

Do you know a decent hotel near S.Rural and 60 (or E.Baseline) in Tempe?
There's the Embassy Suites but $169 is a bit steep for one night and I
really don't need two rooms and two TVs :-)

I have found that good old penetrating oil, such as WD40 works. It seems to
seep under the rubber over a period of time, letting it go. This is the
exact same thing as the official rubber remover, which is a oily product,
that seems to work the same way.
Just make certain that the oil doesn't soak into your surface, test it on a
inconspicuous area first

Jim,
You must have an extra bedroom in that shack of yours!
Give a fellow SED a break! I'm sure Joerg will bring the wine.
Harry
PS, it's nicer to let your mate remove the rubber and silicone is usually
only required when your Johnson is too limp for the task at hand. But if you
are having side effects from big blue, that is probably the only way to go.

Heading East on Baseline's not the greatest neighborhood, unless you're
visiting the upscale strip joint or the outlet mall or the Fry's at 10 &
Baseline.

A bit North on Priest is another Amerisuites at Rio Salado Pkwy in Tempe
(along the dry Salt River near the airport) - I've roomed there as low
as $40-60/nt. It's about 6 miles from where you're looking.

That must have been a long, long time ago. I had checked Amerisuites
yesterday. The non-gvt rate was around $150.

I remember paying around $70 for hotel stays in the Phoenix area in the
90's. My impression is that it has roughly doubled. Ok, not as bad as
dentists where the cost seems to inflate 20% each year. Just got a bill
this morning for $800. For one (!) root canal. Ouch. A couple year ago I
had one on a molar on the other side and it was $600. That's almost a
galloping inflation IMHO.

Only $800? Can I get the address of that dentist? I could get a round
trip, a stay in a motel, a vacation and that root canal for what I have
to pay in Northeast!

He is a really good dentist, in Cameron Park near Sacramento. But this
was just the root canal. Through an old crown so now it needs a new one
which will tack on $700 or more. And that's just one tooth. There are 31
others that might go off at a moment's notice, who knows. Usually on a
Saturday (costs extra) or just before a return flight like this one did.

Today I joked with someone at church that I might look into dentists
south of the border. He said that this is exactly what a co-worker of
his had done and he was happy about the results. Interesting concept.

Don't do it.

Our local dentist decided she was competent enough to do root canals
and did one on my wife, instead of sending her to the usual pro with
all the video equipment.

She broke a root :-(

Resulting redo by a pro, opening gum line from side to remove broken
root piece and treat infection... almost $5K.

I debating... sue or just badmouth.

Ouch! Well, I didn't mean for root canals. Our dentist is a very good
allrounder, doesn't send us to specialists. The downside is that it also
means he is more seasoned in years and will retire will retire. What then?

At least she should own up to that and contact her insurance. Did you
talk about it with her?

The guy who went to Mexiko had dentures done there, and I believe
crowns. Prices in the US are spiraling so much out of control in
medical. In Europe that's not so extreme but even there people are going
to Hungary to be fixed up.

Shampoo dispenser was hung on shower wall with silicone rubber.

Any cute tricks to remove the silicone rubber without scratching the
Corian?
I don't know much about Corian but silicone is one of the toughest
caulks to get off. The only trick I know is the razor blade thing.
Sometimes I use a piece of Perspex where I sharpened one edge but that
might also scratch. Most likely it isn't just silicone but some kind of
adhesive added in.
Anyway, as far as I know Corian can be buffed.
I tend to want to try harsh agents like lacquer thinner after the chunks are
off. I usually use my fingernails, or razor, or slowly rubbing with Scotchbrite
to remove silicone. After most of it is off, I usually
have to pick at it to get the last off, but some wetting agent, even water and
soap will help. Alcohol is also good. I have never worked with Corian.

Brand-new single-edge razor blades can slice through the stuff, and
even scrape it down thin, but it will leave traces - it's probably
soaked into the Corian. I'd look around for folks that work with
Corian and see if they have any ideas - I don't really know how
the surface finish works - if it's as nonporous as, say, marble,
you might be able to scrape it down so thin as to be invisible.

Good Luck!

Over here silicone rubber remover is sold in shops where they sell
construction materials, wall paper, paint, etc. Works like a charm but
the smell indicates it must be very toxic. Use gloves and make sure
the window is wide open. Using a gas mask is not a bad idea.

Not quite--it scratches fairly easily but can be touched up (carefully)
with fine sandpaper.

DuPont warns against using strong chemicals such as paint remover:

I'd hesitate to use a razor blade scraper, as others have suggested.
How about using plexiglass as a scraper instead? Preferably with the
edge bevelled to 45 degrees or so. Maybe a brand new windshield
ice-scraper would work for this, if you're not equipped to cut your
own.

Seriously, I remembered I have some plastic putty "knives" which will

I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

What's an "ice scraper" ?:-)
Just looked at your address. My bad! :-)

Seriously, I remembered I have some plastic putty "knives" which will
probably work.
If they're as thin as mine are, they may be too flimsy for this. I was
thinking at least 3/32" thick might be needed.

Regardless, it's worth a try with what you have on hand. Otherwise, a
few dollars at Home Depot will get you a stiff piece of acrylic or
polycarbonate. Might not even need the beveling I mentioned in my
earlier post.

Good luck,

Mark

You can buy plastic "spreaders" made for "Bondo" and other brands of
automotive body putty at most car parts places.

Shampoo dispenser was hung on shower wall with silicone rubber.
Shower wall material is Corian.
Any cute tricks to remove the silicone rubber without scratching the
Corian?
I haven't tried it with silicone rubber, but I've had good luck
rubbing of other adhesives and encrustations with a plain old
rectangular erasor. (Today seems to be erasor day, for me..)

Silicone rubber swells and softens from what we call petroleum or lamp oil.

This is not terribly fast, and teh stuff smells, and may damage corian
as well. AFAIK corian is plexiglass-with-filler, and plexiglass isn't
the most resistant polymer there is.

Deodorised paraffin is available, it's used in fog macines an smells faintly
of candles.
