Need help with D-Link DWL-122 Wifi Adapter
(too old to reply)

I'm trying to install a D-Link DWL-122, which is a USB 802.11b adapter.

I'm installing it on a Windows ME system. It's an old HP Pavilion system
from 2001 or so. A Pentium III system with 128 megs of ram.

The first time I installed it, it worked fine. Since ME doesn't have built
in WiFi support, it used the D-Link Air Utiliity that was packaged to find
and configure the settings. It worked perfectly, WEP encryption,
everything was all set up.

I then uninstalled the software and reinstalled it (wanted to make sure
everything worked fine in case of an emergency, since I'm setting it up
for a friend).

Since then, the D-Link Air Utility refuses to show up in the right hand
tray. Manually clicking on the software doesn't do a thing a either. The
USB adapter is detected fine by Windows ME, but the software to enable it
doesn't load properly.

I tried going to Program Files and double-clicking the software. No go. I
tried removing the device in Device Manager and uninstalling the software.
No go. I tried downloading updated drives. I even deleted any references
to D-Link in the registry.

Nothing.

The hardware drivers load fine, but the configuration utility refuses to
load. Task manager says it's running, but I can't see it or activate it.

I've been at this all day now. Does anyone have any recommendations? Aside
from installing XP (not an option, too slow) or buying another brand (may
be an option).

BTW:

I can get an IP address from the router's DHCP server, so I know
something is working. However, I'm using WEP encryption, so I can't do
anything else with this adapter.

The source of your ailments is suddenly very obvious indeed! Did you know
that Microsoft actually apologized for inflicting WindowsME upon the
computing public?

Actually what he needs to do is find the configuration screen that
among other things says "let windows configure this device" and un-
check the little box right next to that. Then the D-Link utility
will again work.

Windows ME doesn't have built in support. Feh.

Ended up just getting a bridge.
