Discussion:
My Router keeps dying...

I've tried this with a Linksys and Netgear wireless b router.

Whenever I'm downloading a lot of files, say using bit torrent along with
WinMX along with downloading newsgroups, my router will lock up. Power
cycling resolves it until the next time.

It got bad enough a couple weeks ago that I reset the router 8 times in 4
hours.

I'm using the Netgear MR814 right now but I've tried this with the Links
BEFSWwhatever wireless router too.

I'm on a Cox cable connection using the Motorola Surfboard 5100. If I have
no router, nothing locks up. Right now my home cable connections' been up
for 7 days with no downtime (knock on wood).

I use primarily one laptop (Dell Latitude) with an onboard Intel NIC and a
desktop with an onboard Intel NIC (ASUS P4B533E).

I've talked to a couple other friends who've experienced similar issues
with their routers (Netgear or Linksys) and with different connections
(DSL).

Has anyone else here run into these issues? Any suggestions on how to
resolve this? Aside from buying a $500 router? Worst case scenario I guess
I could try to set up a desktop to act as a router, but I'm hoping it
doesn't come to that.

Okay, stupid question: Have you tried a non-wireless version of those
routers?

Next stupid question: Have you checked to make sure you're running the
latest-and-greatest firmware on those routers?

Not yet. I'm trying to get the wireless part to work. But I think
that's what's causing the problem.

Yeah. Netgear sucks. Their firmware would not install right for the life
of me.
IT kept causing the router to lock up. I FINALLY got it to work after 2
months
and it fixed nothing.

A lot of this wireless (wi-fi) stuff seems to have problems with
freezing, or dropping connections. I can say the D-Link 900AP+s
I'm using are not amongst those - even leaving them running in the
sound stage on non air-conditioned days in Burbank last summer.

The down side is they are 802.11b only, WEP only (at least for now)
but then as you know if you enable the TI (ACX100 chipset) proprietary
protocols sniffing data gets much more difficult anyway...

As well, when you phone Netgear you're talking to India, I believe
D-Link is still in the USA - or at least they manage to sound like
they are over the phone.

Maaaan.

I just bought the DLink DI-514. I was kinda happy as it
lasted for almost a full day of heavy usage. Multiple concurrent
downloads, browsing, etc.

It even maintained my telnet sessions longer than the Netgear
MR814 or the Linksys whatever did.

But it just died now.

I can't believe that all these wireless routers somehow all
crap out around me. But I can't think of anything else that
might be causing it.

Whenever the computer is plugged directly into the cable
modem, it's all kosher. It's just when a router is thrown into it.

I'm going to try one more thing, which is a Microsoft wireless
router I saw at Best Buy. If THAT fails, then I'm going to try
the non-wireless routers.

I did some designs for Xtreme Spectrum (John McCorkle's award-winning
spread spectrum innovations) but I have no idea what products they've
gone into.

What you want are these -

DI-604 router, does NOT have any WiFi crap in it.
DWL-900AP+ Rev C or higher, WiFi access point (separate unit).
You will have to load the newest firmware into the 900AP+.

Interference? When it craps out turn off the router and see
who else you can see on the radio in your notebook.

I was trying to stick to $50 or less.

The wireless is more of my visitors than me. I've probably used wireless
maybe twice in the last five months.

I do have neighbors with wifi. I hope they're all suffering.

But the fact is the router itself locks up. It's also on
a different channel than the other access points.

Could be tough - the router here is cheap enough, but the access
point is not.

Well then - get the above router, put yourself on it, put your guests on the
old one with the WiFi stuff and let them lock it up all they want cause you
won't ever even notice it slowing down.

One of them is probably doing well, all the others probably are not.

Yea but when you're close you have to be a few channels apart, and if
there's more than a few of you that's hard cause there are only about
a dozen channels.

Or you could load up the European firmware and try one of the few extra
chs they get.....

If you are sure it is the router crapping out. Could even be the joy of
someone else using the same internal IP address for the router and the
same frequencies for the AP. Or construction. Or someone who has boosted
their AP's signal a bit too much.

Or, in a really bizarre coincidence, one f your neighbors could have a
wireless device with the same MAC as your router. When they use it, your
router goes down.
