Well, first let me assure you that they have nothing to do with
cranberries. As if!

Imagine a sorta huge pea pod with maybe 4-6 beans inside, each bean
sorta football shaped, hard, about the size of a marble. Both the pod
and the beans have georgeous swirling green and purple colors; that,
and the ease of popping them open, makes them fun to peel.

Go find a good produce stand and ask; they may be just going out of
season about now. We first discovered them at the Zuni Cafe, and now
make them at home. Worth the effort.

If you can track some down, let me know and I'll post my recipe.

And, to head off the whiners, beans are definitely on-topic when it
comes to circuit design. Brains need protein!

Sounds like Edamame, of which I eat copious amounts while awaiting my
sashimi order ;-)

And an old WWII ditty:

Beans, beans, the musical fruit,
The more you eat, the more you toot,
The more you toot, the better you feel,
That's why I eat beans at every meal.

No, Edmame are soy beans. They come two to a pod. and look like baby
lima beans. They taste so good it makes me wonder why anyone would want
to ruin them by making them into tofu.

Absolutely! We prepare them at home in the microwave then slosh some
Kosher salt over them. Marvelous!

What you're describing aren't soy beans. My cousin raises soy
beans for a living. They come about 3 to a pod, are about the
size of a large pea, and inedible. They make tofu out of them
because the mycelia of the tofu fungi break down the inedible
parts, not to mention that it softens them so that you can
eat them without breaking your teeth.

I don't know what happens if you just soak/boil them like
"ordinary" beans, but I'd speculate that they're pretty
flavorless, as is tofu. >:Q

Cheers!

Edmame are soybeans and are picked when the pods are still green and
soft (though very fiberous). The pods look just like snowpeas, but
have only 2 to 4 beans in each pod. They taste, and have a texture
that is similar to baby lima beans. No gas production, however.

I currently have 40 acres in soybeans, and they won't be picked
until the pods dry out and the beans are hard. That's the way
they are sold around here. Even dry, they are delicious, but
very crunchy. When they make tofu, they remove all the flavor
and probably vitamins from the natural soybeans

I have, my sister-in-law is a veggie, and lives on the stuff.
She buys in bulk from one of the local veggie-markets.

Inspite of the freshness, and quality of preparation it still
tastes like bland sponge rubber to me.

Tofu is so bland that it ends up tasting like what ever it is
cooked in. Cook it in grease, it tastes like grease. Cook it
in chili, it tastes like chili sauce...

You need to try some Edmame. It tastes like it was once alive.

The local supermarket used to sell natural soybeans roasted and salted, and
they were very good. They're like a cross between a bean flavor and a
peanut, and are quite crunchy. Very high in protein, excellent snack.

Alas, they are no longer in the stores... wonder what happened?

We have Sushi places in a lot of our supermarkets (†). They usually
have a cold case with pre-packaged Edamame.

(†) For example AJ's has restaurant-quality Sushi and Sashimi.

Is that an American trillion (10^12) or a UK trillion (10^18)?

In either case, whoever it was is to be congratulated - they've pushed out
the sensitivity boundary of elemental analysis quite a long way. Do you know
anything about the analytical technique involved?

As far as I'm concerned, the old UK nomenclature is obsolete. But it's
true that we don't use 'parts per xxxx' (nor even 'ppm') in standards
because of this ambiguity.

I understand it involves a rock with a 3-pin connector.

I disagree, John. You go ahead and eat your beans; I'll stick with my
donuts and we'll see who can solve the more complex equation.
Carbohydrates win every time!
That's for sure!! For those in the LA area, or even passing through
LAX with some time to kill, I highly recommend Randy's Donuts. See
http://www.randysdonuts.com/ for info. Definitely way above average
and it's easy to find with the monster donut on top of the place and
they're even open 24 hours a day.
Billy Y..
But do they ship to the East Coast?
Their coffee is not so good.

*Cranberry* beans ?? What's that?
...Jim Thompson

Here on the Left Coast it's 1.1%, but that's based on purchase price;
they can't reassess a house to its current market value unless it's
sold, so I'm paying under $5K on a house worth, well, about 950. The
next buyer will of course get soaked.

US$950k would buy most of NZ! :-) Just kidding - there's a few houses here
worth that, but not too many! There's no duty on house sale/purchase though,
which is cool, coming from Australia where it's higher than even you guys
pay.

And I just love "Californicator" - first time seen! :-)

Not original with me, but I don't know where I picked up that phrase.

The house prices in Arizona are now referred to as being
"Californicated", driven way up by Californians coming to Arizona and
paying the asking price.

For example, we bought our present place (3650 sq.ft. single-level on
almost a 1/2 acre lot in the Ahwatukee Foothills) for $360K in 1994;
it now appraises at $550K.

The first time I heard "californicate" was in, I think, Playboy
magazine, in the 1960's or 1970's, when Oregon passed a "personal
use" law (less than an ounce of pot was lowered to a citation,
not even a misdemeanor.) Almost immediately, in response to the
vast influx of Californians who just wanted to get high in peace,
some Oregonian came up with a bumper sticker: "Don't Californicate
Oregon."

Cheers!

California is a nice, perfectly normal place. We went out for
breakfast this morning at Destination Baking down the hill on Chenery
street, had coffee and pastries just like normal Americans. A nice,
wholesome couple passed on the street, pushing a baby buggy. She was
small, plump, and cute, with horizontally-layered pink and black hair,
and he was a big burly guy wearing a pullover shirt and a nice pleated
denim skirt.

Just like anywhere else.

Scotland, anyway, though the horizontally layered pink and black hair sounds
a bit conservative for the Scots, and the nicely pleated skirt would be made
in some noisesome tartan pattern. I don't think the Levi clan has registered
a tartan.

Carmel, Marin, or Monterey (I took basic training at Ft. Ord) are some

I was stationed at a Nike Herc site when I was in the army back in '69.
For the most part, those Nike missile sites are closed and torn down,

Many people back then didn't realize that these missile sites were all

practiced by locking their radar onto commercial aircraft approaching

My radar class at MIT visited a Nike site in New Hampshire. They
practiced by locking their radar onto commercial aircraft approaching
Logan Airport in Boston ;-)
My first manager was a reservist and did time on a Nike battery
in NJ. They damned near shot down a commercial jet playing such
games. They didn't have everything safed and the bird just about
flew. That would have been a big oops, considering that the Nike
had a nuke warhead (few knew it at the time). He was surprised
that I knew, since it was classified. (...how else to shoot down
incoming missles in the 60s?)

Carmel, Marin, or Monterey (I took basic training at Ft. Ord) are some
of the most beautiful places along the coast. They're great for
visiting, but as far as living there, I dunno. They're right on the San
Andreas Fault. Remember that earthquake that pancaked the freeways and
broke the Bay Bridge?
Thing is, hurricanes and tornadoes kill hundreds of times as many
people in this country as earthquakes... so far, at least. A good Gulf
hurricane can kill hundreds of people at a whack.

On real estate taxes I think we in Arizona get a pretty low rate...
~0.7% of full-cash-value... $3900 taxes on a $550K house.
...Jim Thompson
Here on the Left Coast it's 1.1%, but that's based on purchase price;
they can't reassess a house to its current market value unless it's
sold, so I'm paying under $5K on a house worth, well, about 950. The
next buyer will of course get soaked.
John
But that be Californicator pricing. Around here $950K would buy you one
hell of a house.
...Jim Thompson
--
US$950k would buy most of NZ! :-) Just kidding - there's a few houses
here worth that, but not too many! There's no duty on house sale/purchase
though, which is cool, coming from Australia where it's higher than even
you guys pay.
And I just love "Californicator" - first time seen! :-)
It is also known as the Peoples Republic of California (or Peoples
Republic of Kalifornia). If you have ever been there, it is pretty
easy to figure out why :-(

With your first message - I thought it was just plain rude.
But with the explanation below - I think you got a good idea. We need a
list of each and every senator, representative, governor, legislator, etc.
Maybe then they'll do something about this spam crap.

.... how can the demand for "pen1s enlargers" possbly be that high ?!?!?!?!

We need to eliminate the little pricks that are paying for having
their ads disseminated.

On one of the other ng's, someone commented on the "increase your size

I'd like to! Swombo (She WhO Must Be Obeyed) and I went on a cruise in
May for my 50th, and our 29th wedding anniversary, around the pacific. I
'd happily be there right now.

Close, just a stones throw from the beach, but we don't have annual
taxes on property. We don't pay annual taxes on anything we own, except
stocks/shares and capital investments, when you are taxed on profits.
The only property tax is a 'stamp duty' when you buy the property and
annual local council (county) rates that cover sewage, garbage disposal,
street cleaning, etc etc. This council rate for me is AUS$540 pa, around
US$380. I assume that similar rates/taxes exist in most places. In fact
we have a neat thing here called negative gearing, I can actually get a
tax rebate on the property I own if I rent it out.
